Hi there! I'm Kristen. I'm so glad you are here.
I am a small business owner who is passionate about details & logistics and supporting your needs.
I am a medical mama, witness to tenacity and advocate. I am the Executive Director & founder of the patient advocacy organization CLOVES Syndrome Community.
I am and have always been a writer.
A bit about where I've been:
I grew up in Oklahoma [where the wind comes sweeping down the plains].
In 1995, I was an intern on a gay rights campaign in Maine. I fell in love with Maine during that summer (and started to believed that I was a displaced New Englander at heart). Oh......and I met my person there. I moved to Maine after my college graduation.
I became a mom for the first time in 1999 and again in 2002. That's right, I am the parent of two teens.
Witnessing them grow, change, struggle, succeed and blossom into teenagers has been love filled, roller-coaster-like, challenging and joyous. It is simultaneously celebratory and anxiety provoking seeing them at this developmental stage. We are charged now with encouraging them to develop roots and spread their wings in this phase of their lives.
I was a Licensed Social Worker from 1999-2010, providing home based support to children and families with an array of developmental and mental health needs. In the midst of caring for my own child with major medical needs, I got beyond burnt out. I tried my best to make it work because [at that time] it was 'easier' to suck it up, and keeping bringing home a paycheck and health insurance, than to ask for what I needed. That only worked for so long. Eventually, I had an epiphany that I needed to be done with social work [even though it was paralyzing to think about making the leap to leave]. I retired from Social Work at the end of 2010.
I contain multitudes.
I believe that we are all creative beings.
My mantra is being, doing, feeling.
I believe that we can do hard things.
I believe that rest & silence are critical components to nourishing kindness in ourselves.
I believe in saying thank you again and again.
I believe in the power of connection, touch, love and joy.
I believe that "self preservation is a full time occupation." Thanks to Ani Difranco for that one.
Random facts about me:
I love humor, hugs, belly laughs and cooking.
At one time I had a pierced belly button and a shaved head. I also wore white lace combat boots on my wedding day.
I am an INFJ.
I gave my cat an Instagram account.
I am a frequent floater.
Solo travel makes me giddy.
I write a lot of lists [maybe just to cross things off].
I scream on all roller coasters [even the ones for toddlers].
I drive a mini-van [and kinda like it].
Thanks for being here!
