It was the winter of 2010.
I was exhausted, bone tired and frazzled to the max.
After working full time as a social worker and living and parenting through a series of major surgeries and hospitalizations with my daughter, I was really depleted. Beyond exhausted. So totally done.
Overwhelmed and irritable was how I was showing up in life. And I kept drawing that vibe back into my daily experience. I remember being pissed off a lot of the time.
I remember almost constant pain in my upper back. I was frustrated with my kids, cranky with my spouse and living in lack. I had lost much of myself - my essence and spark - through years of intensely difficult situations. I was deep in grieving and I had forgotten how to have fun, how to laugh, how to be light.
There was a point where I came to the realization that I could stay on my current course of frustration, anger and resentment, or I could choose a new path.
I believe that when we are intentional and aware about our words and actions, we create giant ripples of love and gratitude. When we share our experiences with others, we shine our light.

My shift into a heart full of gratitude started with the most tiny adorable notebook. A notebook that still lives in my purse. A notebook that holds the memories of who I was five years ago, and who I am today. A notebook that is now filled with truth, love and pure gratitude.
The first page of the my gratitude notebook reads:
“Gratitude Journal:
To document and make space for gratitude.
I am grateful for:
Thanksgiving
Family
Seatbelts
Medical stability
New friendships
My strong emerging voice
The ocean”

I made a list and I wrote down what I was grateful for.
And that was the very beginning of my shift into gratitude.
Today my gratitude practices have evolved and they are always changing.
My practice continues to deepen and emerge as I do.

“One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is
to stand up and show your soul.
Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it.”
-Clarissa Pinkola Estes-
